Summary of Recent Meetings on the Proposed Changes to Fire Code

Many residents have expressed that they were unable to attend the Fire Code review meetings held on 9/13, 9/17, 9/18 and would like to be updated with the topics discussed.

Subsequent to the initial review with City Council on 9/11/12, the proposed changes to the Colorado Springs Fire Code (proposed by Fire Marshal Brett Lacey) have been presented at three neighborhood meetings for Mountain Shadows residents. Over the week, we will be emailing you information about the various subjects covered at these meetings, from insurance considerations to compliance costs and the basis of the proposed changes.

The proposed changes DO NOT just apply to Mountain Shadows. The proposed changes would apply to ALL areas in the city within the hillside overlay area.

At the meetings, the Fire Marshal and his staff gave a slide presentation and played a very informative video illustrating the effect of wind driven embers on building structures and surrounding vegetation.

Similar meetings are now being scheduled for other neighborhoods across the city to discuss the Fire Marshal's proposed ordinance for reducing fire risk by improving the ignition resistance of buildings and landscaping in the hillside overlay area. After the public has been given a chance to weigh-in on the proposed changes, City Council will be considering the request to approve the modifications at a formal City Council meeting in October.

The Colorado Rebuilds webpage published by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IIBHS) has been updated to include the highly requested handout that accompanied the Fire Adapted Communities workshop at Lowe's. Click here to download the IBHS Guide to Creating a Fire Adapted Home.
